6 Tips on How to Manage Utilities Before & After a Hurricane
We still have a couple months to go of the 2022 hurricane season. With that said, it’s important to be properly prepped in case a storm is forecasted to hit your region. Sandbags, boarding windows and doors and trimming trees are all common ways to reduce the property risk during a hurricane; however, it’s also important to know how to manage your utilities following a storm.
Tips #1
Learn how to turn off your property’s electricity. This is especially important if flooding occurs as it’s crucial to know how to turn off your circuit breaker if needed.
Tip #2
Don’t forget to use surge protectors to keep your big electronics safe during a storm.
Tip #3
Test your generator prior to use so you can ensure you are using it properly. Small generators used improperly can put you at risk for carbon monoxide poising, a fire, or electrocution.
Tip #4
If you have a gas line that runs underground, watch for bubbles, a sulfur-like smell or discolored vegetation outside as it might be a sign of a gas leak.
Tip #5
Don’t turn off your natural gas service as that should only be done by a utilities service personnel.
Tip #6
Have a portal phone charger fully charged and easy to find.
