What is a Container Home?
A container home can (technically) be any home made from a shipping container. Typically, containers only come in two sizes, 20 feet by 8 feet (160 sq. ft.) and 40 feet by 8 feet (320 sq. ft.), so it’s common for builders or owners to stack or combine containers to make a larger unit.
Are they Cost/Time Efficient?
Shipping containers are a great alternative to purchasing and building a home when it comes to time and money. Containers can start at as little $1,600 for a smaller used option and oftentimes can be put together in less than a month, depending on property, permits, size and design of the home. Although container homes have the possibility to be much cheaper than traditional home construction, owners need to consider other costs such as purchasing land, insulation, transportation, and exterior finishes. However, purchasing a move-in ready container home is also an option, starting as little as $35,000. When considering a build, best practices include building off-site and transporting the unit to the property rather than building directly on the property.
Can You Put Them Anywhere?
Not exactly. Like tiny homes, there are rules, regulations and zoning laws specific to each state and county. So, it’s important for owners to do their due diligence and research the regulations within their jurisdiction to avoid construction issues.
