Lesser-Known Damage to your Property from a Hurricane (Part 1)

Lesser-Known Damage to your Property from a Hurricane (Part 1)

Large hurricanes like Katrina, Michael and Ian caused obvious damage to residential and commercial property, but it’s important to keep in mind that not all hurricane damage is so obvious. In fact, lots of damage can go undetected or ignored following the aftermath of a storm.

Carpet Damage
If you experience carpet damage from a leak or broken window caused by a hurricane, you will likely have to remove and replace all your carpeting. Keep in mind that insurance policies typically DO cover carpet damage, but oftentimes they ONLY cover a portion of that damage.

Spoiled Food
When a bad storm hits, it’s common to lose power for hours and sometimes several days. This can cause food to spoil. Insurance companies often cover up to $500 of spoiled food but the payout is typically capped at that amount.

Damaged Landscaping
Bad weather can cause intense landscaping damage like uprooted trees and lesser damage like ruined gardens. Both types of damage can cause your outer appearance to be compromised. Homeowners insurance does not cover landscaping damages caused by hurricanes so the costs will have to be paid out of pocket to recover any repairs.
